Product Overview

Phenobarbital(50–06–6) is a long-acting barbiturate that is well-known for its sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects.

Phenobarbitalis known as one of the oldest anti-seizure (antiepileptic) drugs still in use today. Mostly, it acts on the central nervous system and enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a neurotransmitter that helps in reducing nerve activity.

The IUPAC name of Phenobarbitalis 5-ethyl-5-phenyl-1,3-diazinane-2,4,6-trione.

The appearance is in crystalline white powder form.

The chemical composition of Phenobarbitalis-

Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen.

The chemical structure of Phenobarbitalconsists of a barbituric acid core, a phenyl group and an ethyl group.

Phenobarbital is used in the formulation of medications for tonic-clonic and partial seizures.

It is incorporated into sedative formulations used pre- or post-procedure.

Phenobarbital API is used in the manufacture of neonatal seizure management drugs.

It has historically been included in sleep disorder formulations, although its use is now limited due to regulatory concerns.

Therapeutic Applications

Phenobarbital has therapeutic applications that are helpful for the management of generalised tonic-clonic seizures and partial (focal) seizures. In this way, it helps to stabilise the electrical activity within the brain and thereby reduces the frequency of seizures.

Being the first line treatment for seizures in newborns because of its effectiveness, it is used in injectable formulations due to its rapid action and long half-life.

Phenobarbital is also sometimes used to induce sedation before surgeries. This is mainly used in cases when a quick calming effect is required.

Due to the low risk of its dependency, Phenobarbital is also used against anxiety and Insomnia.

Specification Parameters

The chemical name of Phenobarbital is 5-Ethyl-5-phenylbarbituric acid.

The CAS number of Phenobarbital is (50-06-6), which is being globally useful for the substance registration.

Molecular weight is 232.24 g/mol.

The identification can be done with IR spectroscopy, UV, HPLC or chemical test.

Phenobarbital is also lightly soluble in water.

Talking about its pH, an aqueous solution has a pH of 5.0–7.0.

The toxic metal content must be ≤10 ppm to meet safety standards.

Packaging & Storage

Typically, Phenobarbital is packed in HDPE containers, fibre drums, or aluminium-lined bags and with a double layer of polyethene liners. This is mostly being done to keep it safe from moisture and dirt.

It is also Available in standard bulk packaging options (e.g., 1 kg, 5 kg, 25 kg, 50 kg) with double-layer liners to preserve product quality.

Coming to its storage, then Phenobarbital requires a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, and has to be away from heat and moisture.

However, the ideal temperature is between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F).

Phenobarbital has to be kept in a tight container and when not in use, to avoid exposure to air.

It is also necessary to follow all regulatory guidelines for pharmaceutical storage to maintain product integrity and security.
