Product Overview
2,3-Dichlorobenzoyl cyanide, also written 2,3-dichlorobenzoyl nitrile or (2,3-dichlorophenyl)oxoacetonitrile, is a yellow crystalline solid supplied under CAS 77668-42-9.
Structurally it is an acyl cyanide a carbonyl group bonded directly to a nitrile carbon on a 2,3-dichlorinated benzene ring.
That arrangement gives it exactly the reactivity its downstream use requires.
The carbonyl is strongly electrophilic and the cyanide is an excellent leaving group, so the molecule presents two adjacent electrophilic carbons in a defined geometry.
Condense it with a bifunctional nitrogen nucleophile and a heterocyclic ring closes across both.
That is precisely what happens in the manufacture of lamotrigine.
The acyl cyanide is condensed with aminoguanidine, and the resulting adduct is cyclised to give 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine lamotrigine, a first-line antiepileptic and bipolar maintenance medicine on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
The same reactivity that makes it useful makes it demanding.
Acyl cyanides hydrolyse readily, and hydrolysis of this compound releases hydrogen cyanide.
Strict moisture exclusion has to continue through drying, packing, storage and the customer’s charging step. Water is not a quality nuisance here. It is the hazard.

Application in Synthesis
This intermediate has one dominant commercial destination, and the route is short.
Lamotrigine is used in the treatment of epilepsy and in bipolar maintenance therapy, and appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Demand is broad, geographically distributed and structurally stable a materially better commercial position than an intermediate tied to a niche or withdrawn product.

Cyanide Safety, Moisture and Emergency Preparedness
Why Moisture Is the Hazard, Not Just a Specification
Acyl cyanides hydrolyse. When this compound meets water it breaks down to 2,3-dichlorobenzoic acid and hydrogen cyanide.
In a sealed drum with a low-moisture specification and an inert blanket, that reaction does not meaningfully proceed.
In a drum that has taken up atmospheric moisture, in a humid transfer area, or in a waste stream that has been acidified, it does.
Handling Rules
Keep containers sealed under a dry inert blanket; minimise open-container time and re-seal immediately after dispensing.
Handle in a closed system or under effective local exhaust ventilation, with HCN detection appropriate to the operation.
Allow containers to reach ambient temperature before opening to prevent condensation on the solid.
Charge into thoroughly anhydrous systems; water in the reaction solvent generates HCN in the vessel.
Never acidify cyanide-bearing waste streams; treat cyanide waste through a validated destruction route before it reaches effluent.
Segregate strictly from water, acids, alcohols, amines and strong bases.
Full chemical-resistant PPE the compound is toxic by skin contact as well as by ingestion and inhalation.
Ensure cyanide-specific first aid provision, trained responders and emergency procedures are in place before the material arrives on site.
Note the aquatic hazard classification plan containment so that no cyanide-bearing material can reach drains or watercourses.
What We Do Before You Receive It
Handling, storage and emergency documentation issued ahead of the first shipment, not with it.
Retest guidance for any consignment that shows evidence of moisture ingress or seal compromise in transit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is this intermediate used to make?
Lamotrigine. The acyl cyanide is condensed with aminoguanidine and the adduct is cyclised to give 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine.
The compound supplies both the dichlorophenyl group and two of the triazine ring carbons.
Lamotrigine is used in epilepsy and in bipolar maintenance therapy and appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
How hazardous is it?
This is an acutely toxic, cyanide-releasing material.
Consult the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your batch for the classification, and ensure cyanide-appropriate detection, PPE, emergency provision and waste treatment are in place before the material arrives.
Why does moisture matter so much?
Because for this compound moisture control is a safety measure as much as a quality one.
Water hydrolyses the acyl cyanide to 2,3-dichlorobenzoic acid and hydrogen cyanide.
Moisture in incoming material therefore means lower active assay, an acid impurity already present, and HCN generated inside the drum. We control water by Karl Fischer and ship under a sealed inert blanket.
What is the Minimum Order Quantity?
Our minimum order quantity is available on request.
Dangerous-goods packaging and documentation costs make very small consignments uneconomic for both parties, so smaller quantities are discussed at enquiry stage.
